Who We Are. Patients should choose radiation oncologists who have expertise and experience in a wide variety of cancers, those with a dedication to research in their field and those who work as a part of an integrated team of caregivers. At The Lacks Cancer Center, we understand these requirements, we put ourselves in your position and we employ a truly gifted staff of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, treatment planners, radiation therapists and oncologic RNs. Our team has a great deal of experience in nearly every form of cancer. They remain committed to researching and developing new and improved ways of fighting cancer through progressive radiation therapies. Members include:
Radiation Oncologist. Our radiation oncologists are leaders in the innovation of radiation oncology. They manage the patient’s radiation treatment from start to finish, monitoring them on at least a weekly basis and often following their progress for years after treatment. These specialists are MDs (medical doctors) with at least five years advanced training in the use of ionizing radiation as a treatment for cancer and related diseases.
Medical Physicist. The medical physicist is a member of the team that develops new ways to improve radiation oncology and works closely with the radiation oncologist to develop the safest, most effective treatment plan for each individual patient. Qualifications for this position include a Master's or PhD level graduate degree in the area of medical physics, followed by several years of advanced training in radiation oncology physics.
Treatment Planner. With advanced training in dosimetry—a form of radiation dose calculation—the treatment planner assists the medical physicist in developing the best possible treatment plan for each patient. Many treatment planners have prior experience as radiation therapists.
Radiation Therapist. These trained professionals oversee the actual radiation therapy as prescribed by the radiation oncologist, working closely with each patient on a daily basis to ensure that therapy is delivered accurately and safely.
Radiation Oncology Nurse. These RNs work closely with the radiation oncologist in monitoring patient care.
