Radiation Therapy Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Am I going to be radio-active after my treatment?

No. With external beam treatment, the radiation is only on during the time the machine is operating. The radiation passes through your body without leaving residual radiation behind. You can still have the exact same contact with your family as you had before.

However, the precautions are different if you need to have internal radiation or brachytherapy. Your doctor will explain the procedure for radiation safety if you have this type of treatment. You may have to spend some time in the hospital in a private room.

What happens if I miss a treatment?

Generally the radiation treatments are given once a day. On occasion patients may have to come twice a day. Treatments sessions can continue from 2 - 8 weeks, and in some cases more. You will get the best possible benefit from your treatment if you come every day that you are scheduled. We understand that there may be emergency situations that keep you from making your appointment. Please call the office to let us know.

Will I feel the radiation during treatment?

No. You will hear only the buzzing of the treatment machine. You will not feel any sensations during the actual treatment.

What happens if I have to cough or sneeze during my treatment?

You are being monitored constantly during your treatment with audio and visual systems. If you move or need assistance, the therapists will immediately stop treatment and assist you.

Will I keep the same appointment time throughout my treatments?

Most often yes. On occasions we have to make adjustments in the daily schedule to accommodate for machine maintenance or light or heavy treatment days. At this time we will do our best to accommodate a time that works for you.

Will all of my doctors be kept updated on my progress?

Yes. After your treatments are completed, each physician on your team will receive copies of your treatment experience and tolerance.

Will I get burned by the radiation?

It is difficult to predict who will get a skin reaction. The reaction can be as mild as light dryness and itching to moist weeping and blistering of the skin. In either case, your doctors and nurses will take every measure to lessen the effects and treat the symptoms. You will receive specific instructions on how to care for your skin during radiation treatment. It is important not to use anything on your skin unless recommended by the nurses. Even herbal treatments can sometimes cause a reaction to become worse. Please ask before using any product.

How often will I get to see the doctor during treatment?

You should expect to have an evaluation at least weekly by the doctor and nurse during your treatment. Keeping in mind that at any time in between these evaluations you are encouraged to voice concerns or questions.
