The Department of Radiation Oncology
Our Mission. The mission of The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s Radiation Oncology Department is to ensure that our community has access to the most sophisticated cancer treatment technology available. In keeping with our mission, we were among the first centers in the world to develop a TomoTherapy® program, as well as being named the only TomoTherapy Center of Excellence in Michigan. In addition we are recognized as having laid the groundwork for Tomotherapeutic cranial radiosurgery, and we were one of the first centers in this region to implement Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). We continue to lead with current programs in Respiratory Gating (software that focuses on delivering radiation to the tumor only) and cone beam CT.
Our Team. Our Radiation Oncology program is staffed by gifted individuals who are motivated to ensure the best possible care for our patients. All Lacks Cancer Center radiation oncologists are board certified by the American Board of Radiology and are members of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). They have trained at the nation's most prestigious academic centers in the application of sophisticated radiation technology, are published in well-respected scientific journals of oncology, and are committed to community-based clinical research. This expert team is dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with medical oncologists, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists and counselors to coordinate individualized care for each cancer patient.
What is a TomoTherapy Center of Excellence? TomoTherapy Incorporated, the manufacturer of TomoTherapy technology, has deemed only 20 centers around the world Centers of Excellence. These facilities are responsible for establishing treatment protocols for all clinical sites—current or future—that utilize the TomoTherapy technology. As a TomoTherapy Center of Excellence, The Lacks Cancer Center joins the ranks of other notable centers such as MD Anderson, The Thompson Cancer Survival Center and The London Regional Cancer Center.
