Dermoscopy
The Dermoscope. The height of dermatological technology, the Dermoscope is a complex tool used in mole mapping and comprehensive analysis of skin lesions. Because it is equipped with a computer program that stores skin “maps” and other pertinent information, our dermatologists can identify and keep an eye on suspicious moles that change over time, and are more likely to contain melanoma.
Mole Mapping. By applying very sensitive digital photography, the Dermoscope creates a detailed, full body map of the skin. This mapping is a simple, non-invasive procedure that involves taking a series of images using a high-powered lens. The images are then stored on a disk and should be maintained for follow-up monitoring of any skin abnormalities by either the patient’s personal dermatologist or a dermatologist from The Lacks Cancer Center.
Lesion Analysis. The Dermoscope may also be used to capture images of skin lesions with an even more higher-powered lens, which provides a highly focused image. Armed with software that analyzes every nuance of the lesion, the Dermoscope then rates it from 0-1. The closer to the whole number 1, the more suspicious the lesion. Based on the dermoscopic rating, our dermatologist will determine whether or not to surgically remove the lesion.
To schedule a Dermoscopy for Mole Mapping or the analysis of skin lesions, simply request a referral from your dermatologist.
