Saint Mary’s surgeon nears 200 surgeries on daVinci surgical robot08/26/2009
Kevin Brader, MD, has performed all of his last 100 surgeries using robot: smaller incisions, smaller scars, faster healing for women
“I can see the surgical area much more clearly and in more detail, ” reports Kevin Brader, MD, gynecological oncologist at Saint Mary’s Health Care, who has performed his last 100 surgeries on the daVinci surgical robot, thus eliminating the need to open a patient using the traditional surgical incision, reducing the time a patient is under anesthesia, and speeding the healing process. “My patients who have surgery with the robot have reduced their recovery time by at least 50%,” he continued.
Since Saint Mary’s purchased the daVinci robot two years ago, as a result of a $1 million gift from the Tom and Mickie Fox family, Brader has become the only surgeon in the area to use the daVinci robot for gynecological surgeries. It has traditionally been used in prostate surgery and more recently in some cardiac surgery.
Brader also reports that his surgeries with the robot take considerably less time than traditional gynecological surgeries. “This is definitely the future of gynecological cancer surgery,” he commented. |
