Making a Gift

In June of 1999, the family of Richard J. Lacks, Sr., a prominent Grand Rapids businessman, issued a challenge to Saint Mary's: the family would donate $10 million toward the construction of a new cancer center at Saint Mary's if the hospital could raise an addition $20 million.

In response, Saint Mary's formed a leadership cabinet of volunteers who got to work and met the challenge --and surpassed it - in June of 2001. Currently, donations total more than $38 million, counting the challenge pledge.

The total cost of the Richard J. Lacks, Sr. Cancer Center will be approximately $42 million. In a word, more donations and contributions are needed. To date, more than 2300 individuals, corporations, and foundations have made donations --some have been for $5, some for $50, or $500, or $5000.
