Fibroid Tumor Overview. Uterine fibroids (uterine tumors, leiomyomata and myomas) are non-cancerous tumors that occur in at least one quarter of all women. They can grow underneath the uterine lining, inside the uterine wall, or outside the uterus.

Most women don’t feel any symptoms with fibroids. But for others, symptoms can include:

• Excessive menstrual bleeding
• Abnormal periods
• Uterine bleeding
• Consistent pain and discomfort
• Frequent urination
• Infertility

Treatment. Treatment options for fibroid tumors include embolization and surgical removal. Embolization is a minimally-invasive alternative in which blood vessels are closed off to prevent blood flow to the tumor, thereby successfully shrinking it. While hysterectomy - surgical removal of the entire uterus - is also a proven method of effectively treating fibroids. Hysterectomy may not, however, be the best treatment for women who plan to become pregnant. In this instance, a myomectomy - a uterine-preserving surgical procedure - is likely a more favorable option.
