Prevention of Prostate Cancer.
Because prostate cancer progresses more slowly than many other types of cancer, regular prostate screenings and annual checkups are crucial to early detection of the disease, particularly for those over the age of 50 who are African-American and/or who have a history of prostate cancer in their family. Otherwise, the best method of prevention is avoiding known risk factors that can be controlled. This means discussing a personalized diet and health management plan with your physician. Most prostate cancer prevention focuses on nutrition and includes:
- Eating more fruits and vegetables, especially processed tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon – all great sources of lycopene, an antioxidant known to lower the risk of cancer
- Eating more whole grains, as opposed enriched products
- Eating moderate-sized portions and controlling calories
- Avoiding foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol
- Limiting sweets and salt
- Drinking alcoholic beverages in moderation, if at all
If you experience any
symptoms of prostate cancer or feel you are at risk, schedule prostate screening now.
