Causes of Prostate Cancer.

The exact causes of prostate cancer remain unclear, however, researchers have identified several significant risk factors:

  • Age. The strongest risk factor. After age 50, the chances of developing prostate cancer greatly increase.
  • Race. Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-Americans than any other race, in addition, they are also more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage.
  • Family History. There may be an inherited or genetic factor to the disease, so having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a man's risk of developing it. The risk is even higher for those with a brother who has been affected.
  • Diet. Individuals with diets that consist of mostly red meat and high-fat dairy, coupled with less intake of fruits and vegetables have a slightly higher chance of prostate cancer.
