Pelvic Mast/Ovarian Cyst Overview

Pelvic masses and ovarian cysts appear as fluid-filled sacs or pouches inside or on the surface of the ovaries. These cysts are quite common, often go unnoticed and are known to disappear without treatment. Although most cysts are harmless, some can be the result of an ovarian cancer. For instance, finding a cyst in a young girl before she's begun menstruation or in a post-menopausal woman is a sign that the mass may actually be cancerous. Since most cysts, however, are not cancerous, routine screening with ultrasounds or CAT scans is not recommended. These tests should be reserved for cysts felt during annual pelvic exams, or if the following symptoms are experienced:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles (periods)
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pelvic pain that is constant or appears directly before or after menstruation
  • Pressure on your abdomen, bladder or rectum

If you are exhibiting any of these symptoms consider scheduling a screening or diagnostic assessment. You can do this by asking your primary care physician for a referral or by making a self-referral. Call 1-877-LACKS-MI or 616-685-LACK(S).
