Liver Cancer Treatment Options
The Lacks Advantage. There is strong scientific research that indicates patients have better outcomes when liver resections are performed by specially trained surgeons with significant experience, such as surgeons at The Lacks Cancer Center.
Primary Liver Cancer Treatments. For certain patients with primary liver tumors—such as hepatocellular carcinoma—there are many viable treatment options available including surgery, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), ethanol injection and chemoablation.
Secondary Liver Cancer Treatments. Fortunately, most patients with secondary liver tumors have normal liver function and can be considered for surgical resections (partial organ removal), such as a wedge resection or hepatectomy. In cases where the entire tumor cannot be removed or it has spread beyond the liver, there is usually little benefit to surgery. In these instances, treatments like radiofrequency ablation or stereotactic radiosurgery can be performed, or our patients can be treated with chemotherapy to shrink tumors in an effort to become an operative candidate.
