Preventative Screening

Screening. Preventative screening and diagnostic testing are essential, because early identification and removal of polyps can prevent the advance of colorectal cancer and greatly increase chances of survival. We offer a variety of screening techniques, but the most common and most effective include colonoscopy, testing for blood in the stool (FOBT), and flexible sigmoidoscopy.

• Colonoscopy. This is a visual examination of the colon using a flexible fiber optic (light weight plastic fibers used to carry information) endoscope. Electronic signals are transmitted up the scope to a computer, which displays an image of the colon. There is a tube-like passage in the scope that allows small instruments to pass through it so tissue samples can be taken (biopsy) and polyps can be removed.
• Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT). Patients provide a stool sample for laboratory testing for blood.
• Flexible Sigmoidoscopy. The sigmoidoscope is a long, thin tube with a tiny camera on the end. A light at the tip of the scope allows the physician to visually explore the colon and search for polyps or bleeding.
